Finally after a long process you have obtained the spanish nationality and your DNI and Spanish passport! Now, If you do not inform anyone you will still be considered a foreigner (NIE) and no one will know that you are spanish (DNI).

 

That is why after you receive your spanish documents, there is still a final step to fully become spanish for the spanish institutions. Being already spanish and having DNI means that your NIE has no validity any more and can/should not be used so you will need to inform everyone that knows you by your NIE number that now you are DNI holder!

 

Where you need to inform that you have changed your situation?

 

The most important are….

 

1. YOUR WORK. It is not necessary to update or have a new contract but is possible to make a writing that you change your NIE to DNI.

 

2. SEGURIDAD SOCIAL. You need to inform Social Security so they will update your details and your past contributions to the SS will continue with your DNI and will be connected.

3. AGENCIA TRIBUTARIA (TAX OFFICE). It is necessary to update your details in the tax office (hacienda) so the taxes of IRPF that you have paid and will pay will be registered with you and not to the non existing person anymore (your NIE)

 

4. AYUNTAMIENTO OF YOUR MUNICIPALITY: Its important to do it so your padrón is connected from the NIE to DNI. Also important in terms of voting or being able to apply for processes in your municipality.

 

5. GENERAL DOCTOR WHERE YOU ARE REGISTERED. If you are working, your NIE will not be registered any more as a worker so your doctor should know about your DNI to be able to maintain your rights to medical care/get baja etc..

 

6. BANCS. From now on you will receive your money as DNI holder so the bank should be informed so they update your details and mode of identification.

 

7. SCHOOLS IF YOU ARE STUDYING. You can inform your school/university that you changed from NIE to DNI so your records and diplomas will be right.

 

8. DIVING LICENSE. if you have a driving license from Spain you will need to inform the DGT so they issue a new duplicate of your driving license with your DNI.

 

9. REGISTRO de la PROPIEDAD / CIVIL / MERCANTIL. If you have bought a property with NIE it might be advisable to update the ownership details. The same if you have a company you will need to amend the ownership of the company.
