Getting Spanish citizenship is a big dream for many people from other countries because that has many advantages and the good news is that in Spain is easy to be achieved.

What is Spanish Citizenship?
Spanish Citizenship is a privilege that lets you live in Spain forever and be equal to another spanish person who was born in Spain. There is not difference from born spanish to achieving it later.
The easiest way to become a Spanish citizen is by being born Spanish. That measn that the parents are already spanish so you are spanish citizen right away.
Luckily the spanish law allows you to become spanish even if you were not born in Spain or not born from spanish parents, the Spanish law also says there are other ways for foreigners to become spanish citizens.

​How to become spanish?
There are different ways to become spanish. The most common and the one that we will explain is by residencia (living in Spain a certain amount of years) but there are others.

Nacionalidad por opcion. This one is commonly done when a father/mother obtaines the spanish nationality then their children can opt to also become spanish.

Nacionalidad por nacimiento. If a child is born from spanish parents (one or both) the child will be authomatically spanish.

Spanish citizenship by residency
Citizenship by residency is becoming eligible for Spanish citizenship by continuously being a legal resident in Spain for a certain number of years. This type of process encompasses different situations, and each situation has a different required amount of time. This brings us to the next question:
How long do I need to live in Spain to get citizenship?
The exact length of time will depend on your circumstances, your family ties and your country of origin:
10 years is the general rule
5 years if you are a refugee
2 years if you are from a Latin American country, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines or Portugal.
1 year if born in Spain or married to a spanish person.

Does the time that I had student visa counts for the time of residence?
Unfortunatelly no. The time of estancia is not considered residence so that time doesnt count. It will start counting once you convert your estancia into residence permit for example into a working permit.

Losing your original nationality?
The general rule is that obtaining the Spanish nationality means that you give up your original nationality.
​
There are some countries however that have an agreement with Spain allow you do the so called dual citizenship (or doble nacionalidad) so you keep both, your origina nationality plus the spanish .

How to apply for Spanish citizenship
The process of applying for Spanish has few steps. Here are the steps.

Wait for your time to fullfill the years to present your application.

While waiting for that time book the exams if you need to do them.

When you are near your application time request your documents from your country of origin (birth certificate and criminal records (adults))

What exams I need to take? DELE A2 and CCSE
To get a Spanish passport and become a citizen of the country, you must pass two different citizenship exams: DELE A2, which is a basic language test that proves you have a high enough level of Spanish and CCSE which is an exam to proof that you know about spanish cultural, society, politics etc.
If you are from a Latin American country, a minor or if you studied at a Spanish secondary or high school, you do not need to take the DELE exam.

Are the exams difficult?
For the applicant that didn't study or doesn't know the language the exam is difficult. For the one who studied or prepare the exams and knows a bit of the language the exam is easier. It will depend on you.
It is all about preparing the exams. We will give you some guidelines.
The passing rate for the CCSE is around 98% of the applicants.
The passing rate for the DELE is around 50% of the applicants.

How long does it take to obtain Spanish nationality?
The application process usually takes about less than a year. That time is quick compared to few years ago that used to take 4-5 years. However, the waiting time has recently been significantly reduced to 5-6 months in most cases.
If the process takes longer than a year is possible to make an appeal to askthe Ministry tospeed the process.
The most important tomake the process go faster is to make sure you have all the documents presented correctly.

Becoming spanish will make a big change in the petition process that you can do for your family members as you will be able to petition your family much faster.
Also you will be able to petition your children up to 21 years old (if you are a foreigner you can only petition children up to 18 years old) and you can petition your parents (you will no need to wait for the larga duración.
