STUDENT VISA

Extension of the student visa (prórroga)

If after your first student visa you decide that you would like to continue in Spain studying then you need to do the student visa extension or prorroga de estancia por estudios.

The first important thing to mention is that the visa extension is to continue doing the same studies (for example you are doing a degre and you are studying for few years, you are studying spanish language and you will do a higher level or you are studying and now you would like to do an internship related to that course) but not to do a new different study. For that you will need to start a new studying applicaton (and again the application must be presented at least 30 days before your current studies visa expire.

When do I need to extend my student visa?

The extension starts 60 days before your card expires up to 90 days after expiration. The advisable is to present it as soon as you have all the renewal documents ready to avoid delays but there will be no problem to present your renewal after your card is expired.

For how long will be the extension?

The new extension that you will get will be the same lenght as your studies, research, internship etc but to a maximum of 1 year. If your studies are longer then you will need to extend again.

Requirements to renew your student visa

  • Proof that you have completed the studies for which you obtained your initial authorization (diploma or certificate).

  • If you don’t have your diploma yet, you can also provide a temporary document that you are about to finish and attach to the foreign office the diploma later.

  • Enrolment in for the studies extension. Again is important that it will not be a new study but a continuation of the previos one.

  • Financial means. You must proof again that you have enough savings to be able to cover your expenses during your studies and to return to your country of origin if necessary.

  • Private medical insurance. You need to proof that you still have a valid private medical insurance and that is paid (public insurance is not valid)

Documents required

  • Full passport copy (all pages)
  • NIE
  • Diploma or certificate from your previous studies
  • Registration (matricula) for the next course and proof that you paid for it.
  • Bank statement certificate of balance.
  • Private insurance extension or receipt.

Timing

It usually takes 1-2 months to get the result of the application.

Working during your studies

If you are studying a university studies (masters, postgraduate, degree etc..) you will obtain automatically a permit to study up to 30 hours per week with which you can go to any job and start working. If you are studying other courses (languages for example) you will not get a work permit automatically.

You will need first to find a job and then you can apply to obtain a work permit and then you can work also up to 30 hours per week.

If you had requested a working while studying permit (compatibilidad) because you are not studying university courses, once your student visa is extended you will need to ask for a new work permit.

Bringing your family members

Good news! Your family members can join you in Spain while you are studying here. The difference is that they will need to apply from the country of origin and not from Spain directly.

The family members who can process this type of visa are: The spouse and children under eighteen years of age or who have a disability and are not objectively capable of providing for their own needs due to their state of health.

The application for a visa as a student family member can be submitted by the family member themselves.

You can do it together with the visa application of the holder of the Study Stay or at a later time.

The only requirement is that you can prove that you have enough funds to cover the expenses of your family members in Spain during your stay.

The authorization of the family members will be linked to that of the student, and they may remain in Spanish territory for the same period and in the same situation as the student. If the family members' stay is longer than six months, they must obtain a foreigner's identity card.

The family members will not be able to working during the time they are in Spain acompanying the student.
